#90 - Dana Sue Gray *

Unlike male serial killers, female serial killers typically don’t kill random people just for the thrill of it.

Typically, money’s involved. Instead of the typical insurance money, though, what we’ve got here is stolen credit cards and checkbooks used in shopping sprees. Yup, Dana is officially known as the “Shopping Spree Killer.”

Her victims were 4 elderly women in Riverside County, just east of LA. What was unusual, though, was how brutal each killing was, including stabbing, strangling, and bludgeoning with heavy objects like a wine bottle and an iron.

Sure enough, a profiler called in to help out the investigation was certain the killer was a male. A shoe print, some long blonde hairs, and a couple of artist’s sketches, though, all pointed to a woman.

The case turned when the daughter-in-law of one of the victims thought that one of those sketches looked a lot like her stepdaughter. Sure enough, the stepdaughter’s house was jam packed wih fancy clothes, jewelry, and shoes. Turns out she had lost her nursing job (for stealing drugs), was $10K in debt, but still couldn’t stop shopping.

What really stood out in this case, though, was the exceptional callousness the killer showed. In one instance, she hauled her boyfriend’s 8-year-old son along on one murder, making him wait in the car while she did her dirty deed. In another, she went for a stolen-credit-card-fueled spa treatment only 45 minutes after offing her victim.

Overall, Dana Sue Gray showed she could keep up with the boys when it came to brutal violence and psychopathic behavior. Except, of course, for the shopping part.
